Carolyn Carson's Obituary
Carolyn Geneva Carson, age 67, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, September 8, 2021. As she entered His kingdom, in the place prepared uniquely for her, she was undoubtedly met by many loved ones who went home ahead of her. This was a blessed, joyous occasion as she was once again reunited with her father, Smith Carson, Jr., mother, Joyce Johnson Carson, brother Keith Carson, brother-in-law Tony Gilbert, and niece Kaelyn Carson.
Carolyn was born on January 15, 1954 at Camp Atterbury, Indiana. She was the third of five children born to Smith and Joyce Carson, and she adored each of her siblings. The family later moved to Detroit where Carolyn attended Our Lady of Victory Catholic School. She graduated from Southfield Lathrup High School and went on to earn a B.S. in Education from Oakland University, majoring in English, Literature, and Social Studies.
Carolyn enjoyed teaching adolescents and young adults for many years. She was an avid reader and loved all types of literature and poetry. When asked, her request for Christmas gifts was always more books. Carolyn retained a wealth of information and was able to converse on nearly any subject that arose in social situations.
Carolyn had an infectious laugh. She enjoyed storytelling that often began with the words, "Remember when," and her audience was always captivated. She never seemed to meet a stranger, and would strike up a conversation with anyone, at any time. Carolyn was blessed with a multitude of friends who brought joy, companionship, and love to her life.
She was an extremely compassionate person. Carolyn took care of her ailing mother in the last few months of her life, offering not only basic needs, but love and understanding. She also developed a special bond with her brother Michael's father-in-law and enjoyed assisting him during holiday meals. And she always requested that Michael's wife make cinnamon salad, her favorite!
Carolyn had a deep faith in Jesus and He was the center of her life. I can only imagine that her homegoing was a celebration as she was engulfed in His perfect love. Carolyn's surviving family members will one day greet her in a joyous reunion. These include brother Michael Carson (Brenda), sisters Rhonda Gilbert and Alice Coleman, nephews Ronnie Coleman and Quinn Coleman, nieces Jordan Carson Kaechele and Yiskah Bath Yisra'el, as well as many great-nephews.
One of Carolyn's favorite literary passages is from a poem written by William Wordsworth:
Though nothing can bring back the hour
Of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower,
We will grieve not, rather find strength in what remains behind.
A celebration of Carolyn's life will be held on a later date.
