Rosella Nugent, a former Grosse Pointe Park resident, passed away on Monday November 25 in her Senior Living apartment in Macomb County. Rosella was born in 1921 and grew up in Red Wing Minnesota. She relocated with her husband Vincent (Red) to California in 1941 and to Chicago in 1942 to build the C-54 transport aircraft that became the workhorse of the Berlin Airlift. The couple lived in the Chicago area while raising six children, and retired in 1984 to Hot Springs Village Arkansas. Red passed away in 1994, and in 2006 Rosella moved to Michigan to be closer to her two oldest sons, Dick and Tom, both Farms residents.

In 2013 Rosella moved into a Senior Living apartment where she became a dynamic part of the community, frequently leading prayer sessions and serving as a Eucharistic Minister (Catholic). She is survived by her six Children, 15 grandchildren and 13 Great Grandchildren.

A memorial gathering is planned for what would have been Rosella’s 99th birthday in early April, 2020. In lieu of flowers please share a personal memory of Rosella with the family or if you wish to contribute a memorial in Rosella’s name the family recommends CARE of southeast Michigan, an important community resource for Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties in Michigan at

One day while riding my bike through Oakmont, I saw you sitting on a park bench. I stopped to chat, you having such a warm smile, and we struck up a friendship. I admired your honesty, your integrity and your kindness. Once I moved, I didn't get a chance to visit as much as I would have liked. Your children should be so proud of the person that you were. I enjoyed talking and visiting with you more than my own mom! God Bless you Rosella, and I hope to see you again someday!!!!

My Rosella💞. I miss you dearly. Thank you for the cookies, snacks, hugs, kisses and conversations we've had. Don't forget, when we see each other again, we're definitely going dancing. LOL

Tom Bender met Rosella on an airplane more than 20 years ago. She shared some of the cookies she was taking to her grandchildren in Chicago and she and Tom became fast friends. He was single at the time. Since then he has shared his courtship, marriage, childbirths and many other experiences with mom by phone and email. It’s a remarkable story and a good example of how easily mom makes friends. Tom has sent me several emails since mom died and I asked him to let me pass on some of the thoughts and memories he shared with me.

“Thank you so much for including me on your Mom’s wonderful life summary.

“Your Mom will always be there as a fond reminder of how wonderful she was just to meet in passing on a fortunate travel day. I was the lucky one to have a seat on the aisle right next to her in that middle seat. I will always carry that wonderful airplane story and the great follow up chats we shared along with the trip to take you and your mom out for dinner in the Detroit area years later! A late start for me - having kids has brought so many wonderful times. She was so kind to send gifts to my little ones after they were born. Handmade Christmas stockings, piggy banks all of which we still have. She always remembered them as they were growing up. And now my two young ones now are 10 & 12.

“It is hard to believe that was well over two decades ago when I first met her and she was so dear to share some of her wonderful homemade cookies with me on that flight. There are only a few of those chance meetings you ever remember out of all of the business trips one takes over the years. That is one of less than a handful that I will ever remember.

“I will carry some wonderful memories and a great story or two with me the rest of my days as I think of how dear your mother truly was. She was a perfect example of what the greatest generation represented, as there are very few remaining.

We have such great memories of our time at Nugent family reunions in Red Wing, and getting to know Rosella and Red. We will keep her in our prayers. Tom Schuck, Weyburn , Saskatchewan.
