Obituary

John D. Opie

John “Jack” Donald Opie. Age 80. December 13, 2019.

Jack was born in 1939 to the late Mervin and Geneveive. Beloved husband of the late Carol (nee Grzela) until her passing and the late Elizabeth (nee Blake). Loving father of Renee (Randy) Howell, Julia (Maxwell) Miller, and Anne (Timothy) Jarzembowski. Proud grandfather of Shannon Howell, Ryan Howell, and John “Jack” Miller. Dear brother of JoAnn (the late Al) DuCheny, Margaret Gladd, the late Mary Kay (Jim) Grau, and the late Charles Opie.

Jack studied Chemical Engineering at Michigan Tech and earned an MBA from Wayne State University. He worked at GM for 30 years, focusing on environmental compliance and building paint shops. Jack then worked as a consultant, where he contributed to a patented invention. He loved living in Michigan and visiting Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. He enjoyed golfing, skiing and taking road trips. He spent his time reading suspense novels and historical fiction, following current events and rooting for the Red Wings.

More than anything, Jack was a devoted husband and father. He was a generous caregiver to both of his wives and loved to spend time with his children and grandchildren. Visitation Thursday, December 19 from 4-8 pm at Chas. Verheyden Funeral Home, 16300 Mack Avenue, Grosse Pointe Park. Memorial Mass Friday, December 20, gathering at 10 am, until time of Mass, 11 am at St. Ambrose Church, 15020 Hampton Street, Grosse Pointe Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen or Dominican Literacy Center in Detroit.
