Obituary

Grosse Pointe Farms resident Charles E. Van Hampler, passed away Tuesday, January 21, 2020 at the age of 86. He was born April 19, 1933 in Detroit, MI to Alphonse and Lucille Van Hampler and attended Denby High School in Detroit. In his early 20’s Charles began working at Hudon Motor Co. and became an apprentice with the Lathers. He continued with the Lathers and the Carpenters union until his retirement. His craft and skill contributed to the construction of buildings such as Brownell and Lakeside Mall. He never hesitated to help or build anything for family, friends, or neighbors. He often designed and built the necessary tools for specific jobs. His many interests included gardening, wood workings, sports, and most of all: watching his grandkids. Charles was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jean and is survived by his daughters, Laurie Jensen (Dan), Lisa Scoble (Dean), Karen Clark, Kristen Bigham (Rob) and Kathryn Van Hampler; grandchildren, Peter, Erin, Mary, Dan, Joe, Libby, Charlie, Joe, Andrew, Brett and Liz and great-grandchildren, Jack, Joey, Henry, Michael, Nick, Allie, Jamie, Jenna, Courtney, Melanie, Danny, and Ellie. I was sorry to read of the passing of your Dad. I also had read about the passing of your Mom. They were great parents and I enjoyed being around them growing up, whether is was washing the Dodge Dart in the driveway or learning all about the construction of a rabbit cage (in your garage). My thoughts and prayers are with are all of you. God Bless.

My husband, Paul, loved Uncle Charlie. One time Paul asked Uncle Charlie how he liked retirement. Uncle Charlie replied, “I’ve got it made! I have a TV that works and a wife that works!” What a sense of humor he had! Peggy Ronan (niece)
