Tom - we were saddened to hear about your loss. Your dad was great man and he will be missed by his family and his community. Please know that your friends from college are thinking of you at this difficult time. Fondly, The Clarke Family

I came to Oakland University from Massachusetts and was privileged to be in two of Mr. Shine’s classes – Feature Writing and Ethics. I learned more from him than any of my other college professors. Yes, I learned how to “turn a good phrase” as he would say, but he also taught me a lot more about importance of looking within yourself to do what you know is right. His love for his family seemed to radiate from him, as he shared his many (often hilarious) stories and memories. He made it easier to be away from my family for college, simply because he reminded me of them so much. Years after I graduated, we still shared the occasional letter or email – those I will greatly miss. I want his family to know that they are in my prayers.

One of the many things we shared was a love of Irish culture. Thanks Mr. Shine.
“May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face; the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.”

Neal will be remembered by so many as one of a kind ...who contributed so very much to journalism and the greater Detroit community. I feel privileged to have known him through Press Club and other events...and to be among the many who have been inspired by him.

I remember Neal & Phyllis visiting my grandparents Maxime & Lida Mireault. They lived down the street from them on Beniteau. They all had great times just being together. Neal was a great guy. I know he is God in Heaven. God Bless

I met Mr. Shine briefly twice when he visited The Eagle. His humor is
legendary, thanks to stories as told by Tom, but which were even funnier
when told by Mr. Shine. Though I did not know him, I do know his (and Mrs.
Shine's) legacy..the integrity, humor and kindness embodied by Tom, and I'm
certain, their other children. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
